Civil Rights Tour Group Reports Back To The Congregation
|
(Thanks to the
Colleen Bryan
for the post)
In April, 18 members of First Unitarian formed the core of a pilgrimage to major sites in the Civil Rights struggle in the American South. We traveled by bus from Atlanta to Selma, Montgomery, and Birmingham. While all of us had lived through the tumultuous 60s and read extensively about the Civil Rights Movement, this trip inside the Southland reshaped and deepened our understanding of the historic struggle. It also sparked insights into parallels with current day. We were surprised by ways old means of oppression resurfaced in slightly altered guise even after wars were fought and laws were passed to make those practices illegal. The focus on strategies used by both sides of that struggle can meaningfully inform our current efforts to regain or retain civil rights and restore democracy in our troubled country.
We travelers are still processing all we saw and learned, but we are eager to share some of our most compelling experiences with our congregation. We’ll start with a late-summer movie and discussion series (see following notice). We’re also working toward an upcoming Sunday service and links with other community initiatives that assert, protect, and restore civil rights and justice going forward.
A major realization from our trip was how much the gains of the Civil Rights Movement relied on hard work and commitment and alliances across communities of concern rather than on the few avatar leaders we more commonly recognize. We heard about how those communities endured over time and provided a context for learning from their many failures. We have the privilege of community here at First Unitarian Denver. Why not use this as a resource to join together and stand for justice in OUR time?

The History of Beautiful Things, Essays on Desire and Consumption
by Katy Kelleher Is it wrong to want pretty things? They bring joy and meaning to our lives, don’t they? But what is the cost? Home and garden writer Katy Kelleher’s explores the ugly beneath beauty. Using science, history and memoir, she shows us how our desires are mined and grown. Did you know there are crushed beetle shells in your lipstick? Rodent musk in your perfume? And what about those shiny rocks extracted from all those miles-deep gashes in the earth? Kelleher doesn’t discount desire, but insists that we understand our relationship to it. What is the cost of all of our pretty things? What price was paid and by whom?
Come stop by coffee hour and give the book a look.

Artwork Available to First Unitarian Congregation
|
(Thanks to the
N
ancy Crow
for the post)
Nancy Crow and Mark Skrotzki have downsized from a 10 room house with lots of walls to a 3 room condo with lots of windows. We find ourselves with more artwork than we can accommodate! There are probably 100 paintings and posters of varying themes and sizes. Some of the art came from FUSD auctions or has ties to church history, such as the first Building Bridges for Peace program in 1994. It seems only fitting that it find new homes among church members.
We would like to give our beloved church community the opportunity to choose pieces to their liking. We encourage folks to make a contribution to the church in return. The art will be on display in the large classroom at the bottom of the basement stairs and the Community Room.
Come down and make a selection, first come, first served, perhaps after a Sunday service, or give Mark a call at 303.903.0417.

Through First Unitarian Society of Denver’s Reparations giving, some at FUSD have been volunteering at Lincoln Hills Cares. One of their staff, Madi Shaheen, who has arranged our time there sent this email to me:
” Hello 1st Unitarian Friends! The horses are here at Lincoln Hills (in Black Hawk, CO) and they are looking for some volunteers to spend some time with them! Any interest for anyone to spend time with the horses now thru September? Horse experience is preferred, but we are also happy to show you around the barn to get comfortable with chores; there will be some help needed on days when you may be asked to manage these tasks on your own thereafter as well. The days we need most help are Wed, Friday and Sunday – volunteers can pick as many or as little days they wish to spend with these horses ASAP! First Unitarian – Hearing Assistance in Sanctuary
|
Our Sanctuary has a hearing loop. This allows us to better serve the people in our community who have trouble hearing. If you are hearing impaired, you will be able to hear what is said at the worship services and other events with better clarity.
What is a hearing loop and how does it work?
Hearing Loops allow people who wear hearing aids to directly receive the sound from the PA system to their own hearing aids, much like Wi-Fi for laptops. To hear better, you will no longer have to pick up a separate listening device!
Do my hearing aids work in a loop?
If you wear hearing instruments you will need to find out if they have this wireless receiver, called a T-coil or Telecoil, built in to benefit from the hearing loop. The T-coil program is accessed by pushing a button on your hearing aid. This T-coil setting has to be activated before use. Please consult your audiologist if you have a push button on your hearing aids. If your hearing aid is not equipped with a T-coil, or you do not have a hearing aid: we have listening devices available, simply ask a member of our staff.
For more information: www.hearingloop.org. For questions about your hearing aids, please visit your audiologist. For questions about our hearing loop system, please email: Assist2Hear. Inc at:
info@assist2hear.com.
