Loving Your Friends More
Rev. Kristen Psaki
|
Join us on Sunday, July 28th at 10:30 am. What would it look like to let love run wild in your friendships? Committing to love as a religious tradition asks us to widen the circle. What is possible if we expand a certain practice of love beyond spouse, partner and family and cultivate deep and nourishing love amongst friends? Perhaps you already do – or perhaps friendship feels like a relic of a time past. Let’s dig into friendship as a radical act of love that the world needs.

Giving in Action – Grow Local Colorado
|
(Thanks to the Lynn Garman for the post)
On Sunday, August 4th, the Giving in Action recipient will be
Grow Local Colorado. Grow Local Colorado has been growing in the Denver Metro area since 2009. What started out as one demonstration garden in Denver’s Civic Center Park has grown into 20 garden sites tended by over 1,000 volunteers each season. Grow Local’s gardens are in Denver Parks, at the Governor’s Mansion, churches, at partnering organizations’ facilities, and even in a few back yards. Annually these sites provide around 10,000 pounds of fresh produce to over 32 organizations serving those with limited access to healthy food. GLC’s mission is to promote sustainability, food equity and a strong community.
For more information check out their website, GrowLocalColorado.org, or contact them at GrowLocalColorado@mail.com. They can also be followed on Facebook and Instagram.

New Schimmel Grand Piano Acquired
|
(Thanks to the Lia Davis for the post)
We have found and purchased our replacement piano! It’s a Schimmel 6-foot grand, purchased new in 1999 from Chris Finger Pianos in Niwot. This piano was built in Germany with a Bavarian spruce soundboard, excellent Renner piano action, and Abel hammers. The piano belonged to a Jeffco music teacher and musician, and it lived in Rollinsville, CO, its whole life until a couple of months ago when it was moved to Arvada. The instrument is in immaculate condition with tight pins, little wear on the hammers, a perfect soundboard, and an unblemished case (save for one minor scratch on the underside of the lid). The piano action will need to be fully regulated (adjusted), which is expected for an instrument of this age. Unfortunately, Joe Woods won’t be able to complete this work until October, so we will all need to be patient while the piano waits at Joe’s shop! Thank you to everyone who contributed toward the purchase of our new piano!

Miriam’s Book Table is Proud to Feature…
|
(Thanks to the Richard Woodruff for the post)
Democracy Awakening, Notes on the State of America by Heather Cox Richardson. If you have not read this book yet, my question is why not? If you had heartburn for the last month – whether you wanted Joe to stay or go – then this book is for you. Heather Cox Richardson is geeky in a sly way – she slips in so may facts – historic background on the failed attempt at Reconstruction after the Civil War to the not so veiled ‘cowboy’ mentality of Barry Goldwater – and, truth be told, one third of cowboys in the late 1800’s were minorities. Which puts the lie to the ‘comfort’ TV shows of the 1950’s and 1960’s featuring all white cowboys who always saved the day without the (damn) government interfering with their existence on the pure landscape of the (already inhabited) ‘virgin’ West.
I’m listening to this book for the second time thanks to the Libby app and DPL. I’ve got the hard copy. When I signed back into the book on line, I checked out the ‘notes’ feature – very cool if you’ve never used it. I recalled being frustrated at how many times I had stopped the book to make a book mark or note. And, when I printed them out to use them for constructing this review, they ran to 9 pages. Ha,ha. If anyone out there takes more notes, I’d love to buy you a beer and discuss the book. The rest of you – read it, damn it! It will remind you how important it is to stay involved – and VOTE.

First Unitarian is gearing up our “Legacy Giving program” and you will be reading and hearing more about it this coming church year. What is a “legacy gift”? A legacy gift, also referred to as a deferred gift, is a donation that is planned now and made later. People usually give bequests and planned gifts to what has mattered most to them in their lives – to family, friends, and institutions that share their core values.
You will be receiving a letter in the mail in early August to help us identify who has already included FUSD in their will or estate plan, and to find out who would like more information about options for doing so. It is important to let First Unitarian know this. Please return the August letter with your responses and stay tuned to learn more about this important topic!
