Meet Beth Fischer!
I first came to First Unitarian in 2014 after the closure of Warren United Methodist Church, where my husband and I were members for over 25 years. As we were looking for a new spiritual community, our interim minister suggested we might like First Unitarian. How right he was! Initially attracted by the convenient location to our home (I really value walking to worship), I found a welcoming community where I felt I belonged. We were also awed by the thought-provoking sermons and outstanding music. As I learned more about Unitarian Universalist values, the sense of finding my spiritual home only deepened. We have lived in several other countries and traveled to many more, and I appreciate that FUSD embraces a global view and cares about what is happening not only in our own country but in the world at large. The focus of FUSD on social justice, compassion, and the unity that makes us one keeps me engaged, along with the incredible music and stimulating worship services. I FUSD grounds me in what I value and I am proud to be part of a community with such dedicated individuals who act on these values in so many ways.
One of my favorite memories from my time at FUSD was performing in the musical Rear View Mirror just before the onset of the pandemic. That experience was a joy-filled opportunity to connect with so many members of the community (and to dress up as a cow and a firefighter!). There are so many other traditions I value as well, including flower communion, water communion, music Sunday, and our support for non-profits in the community. I appreciate the many opportunities to serve the community and participate in the Giving in Action committee, Chalice singers, Family Promise, and core circle. First Unitarian means so much to me. My only regret is that I didn’t discover it earlier in my life, but I certainly cherish the many friends I have made and the sense of belonging I have experienced in this wonderful community.
