The medical mission team, including Denver-based pediatrician Dr. Mohammed Kuziez, has successfully made it to the south of Gaza and is on their way back.

A group of American healthcare professionals on a medical mission have been refused exit from northern Gaza by Israeli authorities. The group includes Denver pediatrician Mohammed Kuziez.

Their mission, which was authorized by Israeli authorities, began with clearance to enter Gaza on January 9th, 2024, and was scheduled to end with their safe departure on January 22nd, 2025.

However, Israeli authorities have since denied their requests to move south, preventing them from exiting northern Gaza. The group includes 11 U.S. citizens and three surgeons with scheduled procedures for American patients back home on Monday, January 27, 2025.

The Israeli blockade preventing their movement from northern to southern Gaza has placed their lives at imminent risk amid heavy bombardment despite an ongoing ceasefire. This is not only a humanitarian crisis but an urgent matter of life and death.

Please send a letter to your representatives now to demand they act and intervene to guarantee the safe exit of this trapped medical mission.

  • For the Coloradans for Protecting Reproductive Freedom (CO Ballot Initiative), please sign up for Field Squad training to be involved in all local events. These trainings are held on zoom on Wednesdays at 6 pm or Saturdays at 10:30 am to be included in all click here.

  • Virtual Phone Banks: Say it loud! Shout it from the rooftops! Join Coloradans for Protecting Reproductive Freedom for weekly phone banks starting Thursdays, August 8th from 5:30-8 pm! ]]> Protecting Reproductive Rights in Colorado: Abortion Ballot Initiative Gains Momentum

A coalition of local organizations, including Cobalt, COLOR, ACLU Colorado, New Era Colorado, Interfaith Alliance of Colorado, and Progress Now Colorado, put forth CO for Protecting Reproductive Freedoman effort to protect the right to abortion in Colorado. In May, we secured enough signatures for the initiative to go on the ballot.

The initiative does three things:

  1. Protects Our Rights: People enrolled in state health insurance plans – teachers, firefighters, and other state employees – should have access to abortion coverage.
  2. Prevents Government Overreach: Coloradans should have the freedom to decide for themselves whether to have an abortion, without interference by politicians.
  3. Protects a Freedom: Coloradans deserve the freedom to make personal, private healthcare decisions – and that right shouldn’t depend on the source of their health insurance or who is in office. A right without access is a right in name only.

The Ballot language is as follows:
“A change to the Colorado constitution recognizing the right to abortion, and, in connection therewith, prohibiting the state and local governments from denying, impeding, or discriminating against the exercise of that right, allowing abortion to be a covered service under health insurance plans for Colorado state and local government employees and enrollees in state and local governmental insurance programs.”

Since Roe fell, every legislative majority under Democratic control has worked to protect or expand abortion rights. Six states have voted on and won abortion-related amendments, including voter turn-out in red states like Kansas and Ohio. “When reproductive rights were at stake, Democrats have won,” said Rhyan Lake, DNC deputy communications director.  In the eleven states below, abortion is on or proposed for the ballot this year.

]]> Impact of Dobbs Decision: Rising Abortion Barriers and Health Inequities

Roe v. Wade, the 1973 case that established a constitutional right to abortion, was the law of the land for nearly 50 years. But in 2022, the Supreme Court overturned the precedent with the Dobbs decision. Since then, data indicates abortions have increased despite drops in states that have banned or greatly restricted the procedure.

ABORTION RIGHTS ARE UNDER ATTACK

As of December 2023, 1 in 5 patients must travel out of state for abortion care. 19M women live in ‘contraception deserts’ where there are barriers to availability and access to contraception. Compared to states where abortion is accessible, states with bans have higher rates of maternal and infant mortality, especially among women of color.

Thank you to the over 40 volunteers who supported Family Promise last week during our spring rotation. We were able to provide shelter and food support for 15 people from 3 families experiencing homelessness, filling all available beds but one. All 3 families personally and individually expressed gratitude for our support. Mark your calendar for our next rotation scheduled for December 1-8!

Here are some heartwarming testimonials from those we’ve had the privilege to serve:

  • One of our family mothers teared up when seeing the room we set up for her family. She was overwhelmed with gratitude to have a private room with a door. She later told me that it had been many, many months since her family had a room to themselves, and she couldn’t believe how much space they had to stretch out.
  • One dad told me how grateful he was that all the volunteers he interacted with at our congregation are kind to both him and his kids. He said, “Not everyone is always kind, and it’s nice to just not have to worry about that here.”
  • Saint Andrew volunteers went out of their way to thank us for letting them partner with our congregation on Family Promise. They don’t have a facility that allows them to host families, and Saint Andrews is grateful to have a way to contribute.
  • By participating in Family Promise alongside many other churches of different denominations I believe we are building connections in the larger community around a shared purpose, and I honestly believe that has positive impacts that we sometimes don’t even realize.

What is Reproductive Justice? While the recent Supreme Court decision, Dobbs v Jackson Women’s Health Organization is a call to action regarding reproductive rights, reproductive justice is about far more than access to abortion. Working for Reproductive Justice is SACReD work. And we have work to do together.

Multiplatform Worship at First Unitarian Denver

When you enter the sanctuary, you may notice large screen video screens up high on the right and left, displaying the order of service and the words of the songs that we are singing. Last June at the annual meeting, the Congregation approved a grant from your Endowment to fund the installation of these screens – now they are a reality! On behalf of all of us who struggled to read the words on the screen that we’ve been using since the return from COVID quarantine, thank you! 

This is a great example of how a strong Endowment fund can support improvements within our facility. The Endowment is always happy to accept additional contributions; please contact stewardship@fusden.org or sign in to your Breeze account to find out how you can be a part of the next Church improvement project..

The Choir is Back!!

The Choir is back! Come join the Chalice Singers! We will be regularly singing in services beginning with Ingathering on September 11th. Our rehearsals will start on Thursday August 25th with a 6pm potluck dinner in the Community Room. We’ll rehearse 7pm-8:30pm after we enjoy our dinner together. After that we rehearse weekly on Thursdays in the Sanctuary 7pm-8:30pm. ALL skill levels are welcome! We have experienced singers as well as singers for whom this is the first choral experience they’ve ever had. If you’re interested in joining us, please email Brian at brian@fusden.org. Help Needed: Saturday, August 27 Afghan Asylum Workshop in Northglenn

From the Colorado Lawyers Committee Board and Friends

Your help is needed next Saturday, August 27 in Northglenn for the next Afghan Asylum Workshop.  The Colorado Lawyers Committee has been partnering with Catholic Charities Denver to help resettled Afghans complete their asylum applications. 

 

We need both lawyers and non-lawyers to run the workshop. If you haven’t gotten involved yet, this is a great opportunity to provide real assistance without long-term commitment beyond the day of the workshop. No prior experience or expertise is required for most volunteers (although you must complete the online training if you are working with the Afghan families directly).

 

We currently have about 1/2 of the volunteers needed to assist 25 Afghan families at the workshop. If you haven’t already signed up, please join us. You can sign up here.

Climate Justice and Indigenous Right Relations Activities

The Climate Justice Project will not hold our regular monthly meetings over the summer. Instead, we are planning a few informal, agenda-free social gatherings and hope some of you can join us!

Dinner on a shaded terrace, Sunday August 28 at 4:00 PM. Janet Kennedy has graciously offered for us to meet on her terraced patio that is shaded by 110-year-old evergreen trees. Bring your own meal and spend time getting to know members of this committee in a beautiful and relaxed setting. We will dine together and then enjoy a walk around Cheesman Park (optional). FUSD Eases COVID Restrictions

As a result of both CDC guidance (Denver County is “low risk”) and the advice of our own resident physician team, the Board has decided to ease the restrictions currently in place for Sunday services. Masks remain optional and we are also reinstituting that most-Unitarian of activities – Sunday morning coffee! Please join us in the community room following the service and as we all work to rebuild our valued community.

We have coffee – bring cookies and other treats if you like!
