Spirit Jam (2nd-5th Grades)

At First Unitarian, our elementary school aged “Sunday School" programming is available for children in 2nd – 5th grades. Our Religious Exploration class for 2nd - 5th grade aged children meets at the 9:15 am service, with the children and youth beginning (typically) in the sanctuary, and then being sung out to their classes after the Time for All Ages segment of worship.

Location

The 2nd -5th class will meet UPSTAIRS in the Chapel.

Parents: After the children sit quietly with parents in the main sanctuary for 10 – 15 minutes, children and youth participate in A Time for All Ages. Then they are “sung out” to their respective classrooms where they join their Journey Guides until the Sunday Service is complete. Parents should pick up their child from the chapel promptly following the service.

Second Service Care

Nursery and Preschool care is provided for these two age groups UPSTAIRS in the nursery.  Our 2nd - 5th graders are invited to attend the service with their families.

Spirit Jam Workshop Rotation

Elementary aged kids participate in a blend of experiential learning, curriculum classes and social justice projects through workshop style "Spirit Jams" based on our monthly Whole Souul Living theme.  At the beginning of each month we spend time together to learn about our theme and the Unitarian Universalist perspective. Our workshops often include guest speakers, music, dance, arts, theater and crafts.  Each week is different, interactive, engaging, and fun!

What are journey guides?

Journey guides are volunteers from the church who are trained to lead each Sunday Morning during services so that parents can attend and enjoy services. Each journey guide is required to complete a background check and follow the program’s child health and safety standards and child protection guidelines. Our first priority is the safety and well-being of our kids.

How to Enroll

Parents need to enroll their children in the RE program. This helps us communicate upcoming events and changes to programming. It also helps us better manage our room and journey guide resources. Our registration process is now 100% paperless. Please either register or speak with our DRE on Sundays.

Sexuality Education (optional)

This popular program is called Our Whole Lives (O.W.L.). This program is offered separately from the Sunday 2nd - 5th workshop rotation classes on Sundays. The classes are optional for 5th and 6th graders and meet during the 11:00 am second service during the weeks that classes are offered. It is a comprehensive sexuality education program developed by the Unitarian Universalist Association and the United Church of Christ. At developmentally appropriate levels, O.W.L. promotes informed and responsible decision-making and sexual and emotional health in our communities. It fosters meaningful dialogue and parent-child communication.  More information is available about O.W.L. at www.uua.org/re/owl Details about this year’s offerings at fusden.org/content/our-whole-lives
