We Shall Not Be Moved

For nearly 400 years, African-Americans have been oppressed by white Americans. In spite of this oppression, and often in response to it, African-Americans have created a remarkable body of music that has become integrated with American culture. From spirituals and protest songs to jazz and hip-hop, this music served as a means of staying connected to their heritage while also protesting the conditions they faced. Through song, story, and dance, we will explore and celebrate the rich traditions of African-American music in our annual Intergenerational Music Service.
