This Week

Have you wanted to become a member of First Unitarian?  This Sunday you will have the opportunity. There will be a book signing ceremony during the service. If you are interested in signing, there is a little Paper work to fill out. We will have blank copies available at the service. If you have questions contact Mary Hilken at 202-483-4212, or Noelle Botti at 303-725-9927.

This Christmas eve, our service will include a moment where we reflect on the new births that brought new life during this year. If you would like to share the name of a child born in 2017, along with the names of that child’s parent(s)/guardian(s), please send the information to Erin Kenworthy by December 20th. Names will be read and a candle lit on the dais for each child celebrated during the service.

Making a Difference

Salvation

Our Whole Souul Living Theme for December is Salvation (in THIS Life). In truth, most of us need some salvation: from old habits and limitations, from creeping materialism, from a broken economy… The nation needs some salvation: from partisan politics, easy answers, and outright lies. The world needs some salvation…: from pollution, too many people, and senseless wars… You get the idea.

Surrender

Surrender is the Whole Souul Living Theme for August.  By way of introduction, Surrender is the title of the following poem by William Larsen.  It has a word in it, dharma, which is Buddhist term that translates roughly as "teaching"

At our house there live
a girl, a dog, and a yard full of newly planted flowers

Common Ground

Common Ground is our Whole Souul Living Theme for March. In a world that insistently tries to divide us from one another, the central proposition of our faith is that, There is a Unity that makes us One.

  “I am a human being!”
                                               --Michael Carr, FUSD Member

“All the ancient wisdom…tells us that work is necessary to us, as much a part of
our condition as mortality; that good work is our salvation and our joy….”

Divinity

Our Whole Souul Living Theme for this month is Divinity. For traditional Christians, the word usually refers to the Christian God or the nature of Jesus. For Jews, divinity could apply to anything from the orthodox God of the Old Testament to the cosmic Ein Sof (without end) of Kabbahlistic teaching. For many Indigenous People, divinity could refer to the animating spirits of nature or the mysterious forces that turn the seasons or the world.
