We thank everyone for contributing hard-earned resources to the congregation. Here are five ways to financially support the work of First Unitarian at all giving levels. This is part of what we call our “ABUNDANCE” efforts.

  1. Pledge Annually
  2. Use Grocery Cards
  3. Support the Auction
  4. Donate a Car
  5. Memorial gifts & planned giving

Pledge Annually

The vast majority of our annual budget comes from paid pledges: people committing to an amount they will contribute over a 12-month period. This is critical to guiding the choices for what we can accomplish as a congregation each year. Without pledges we wouldn’t have our fantastic staff and we couldn’t maintain our historic facility. We greatly appreciate the financial commitments made through pledges. This campaign is run by abundance ambassadors who work with small groups of members year round.

The congregation has been divided into monthly groups that will be contacted once a year with the option to extend their current pledge or make a new one. Abundance Ambassadors will follow up with each group to answer questions and encourage everyone to return their pledge cards. You will still be able to make your pledge by whatever means (check, electronic funds transfer, stock, etc.) and whatever timeframe (weekly, monthly, quarterly, or annually) works for you. If you would like to become an Abundance Ambassador – there are many volunteer opportunities available. One popular way to volunteer is to adopt a month to support. You will follow up with about 20 people and encourage them to return their pledge card and answer any questions. It is not about asking for a specific amount – just encouraging participation. Training materials and information will be provided! Looking for guidance on how much to pledge? The Unitarian Universalist Association Suggested Fair Share Giving Guide includes a worksheet to help determine a level of financial commitment that works with your income and expenses.

Consider giving based on a percentage of income. Many members strive for 5% of their household income. Remember that FUSD pays a total of $84 per member to the Mountain Desert District ($26) and the Unitarian Universalist Association ($58). We recognize that everyone cannot give equally.  Your giving communicates and demonstrates your connection to this spiritual home.  It is an expression of your life circumstances, hopes, dreams, and ideals. Consider your values, commitment, your income and your needs.    Then….please give as generously as you can!

We also have information on how to make a pledge from investment income.

Use Grocery Cards

This method is one of the easiest ways to support our organization. If you shop at a participating grocer, every purchase you make can raise major resources for our congregation. For every $100 you spend on groceries or gas, for instance, FUSD can receive up to $5 directly from the store. And it doesn’t cost you anymore for your purchases. It is a win-win. This adds up quickly. In fact in the 2013 budget year we have already received thousands from grocery cards. If everyone used the cards regularly, we could double the amount we received last year.

How does this work?

It is simple. Our shopping cards operate like any gift card. Pre-loaded cards are available to buy each Sunday during coffee hour. You then use them like a debit card at the selected grocery stores. The following grocers allow you re-load your card at any of their stores, any time. This makes it easy to use it for all your regular purchases. Just ask the customer service desk in the store to re-load the card with cash or using your own debit card.

  • King Soopers (5% contribution to FUSD)
  • Safeway (5% contribution to FUSD)

The following stores provide single-use cards. You can always purchase new cards each Sunday at FUSD.

  • Sprouts (3% contribution to FUSD)
  • Whole Foods (3% contribution to FUSD)
  • Natural Grocers (3% contribution to FUSD)

Support the Annual Auction

Our highest-earning annual fundraiser is also a memorable time. Great food, drink and music are combined with silent auctions, raffles and a rousing live auction. Nearly half of the money raised often comes through the Fixed Price Dinners and Events. Members sponsor one-of-a-kind gathering at their homes or unique venues. Clearly, our congregation loves to eat well and go to fine concerts, parties, and other events! There are still auction items available in our Second Chance - Over the Rainbow Auction!

There are still seats available for the exciting events from our annual auction.  If you would like to attend any of these outings please contact Diane Hainsworth or Helen Berkman.
