Looking back over the Board minutes and my notes from the year, I realize just how much we have done. I don’t know about you, but I tend to get caught up in the details of who needs to be contacted, what should go on the next agenda, and the like. It’s good to take a breath and reflect on what we’ve accomplished. Here are some of the highlights of the Board’s work this year.

It’s an exciting time at First Unitarian. Even though we’ve been socked in with snow for a while, which is getting on everyone’s nerves (though I’m grateful I don’t live in Boston right now!), I can imagine the bulbs and buds swelling underground, and there’s been a lot of burgeoning around the church as well.

While I was helping with the banner vote before first service this past Sunday, I started up a conversation with a woman I didn’t recognize. She was taking in everything wide-eyed, with a sort of bemused, amazed look on her face. I asked if she was visiting for the first time, and she replied that she actually goes to a Methodist church in town, but she was dropping off her daughter for the youth program.

The last three weeks have felt like a sprint for me. Getting ready for an art show, a fundraiser, a presentation - whew! I have a bit of time now to catch my breath, and to catch up with you all at First Unitarian. This church is my primary community, and I miss it when I don’t have time to be in community with you.

After more than a year of study, careful deliberation, forums and meetings, our Long Range Planning crew has published a draft of the Long Range Plan. We owe a huge debt of gratitude to the LRP team: Colleen Bryan, John Collins, Coral Cosway, Jim Harlin, Nicky Montieth, and Maryanne Thompson. When you see these folks, thank them! They’ve put in countless hours and have done a great job.

[Caveat lector: This post is about this month's theme of freedom, rather than the church board.]  I’ve been watching the action around the Jefferson County Board of Education, and things just don’t seem to be going very well for them. (Full disclosure: I worked for Jeffco Schools from 2007-2013, and I think Cindy Stevenson was a pretty amazing superintendent.) The releasing of Dr. Stevenson last year upset many of the parents and other adults in the community.

Last Sunday, Chris Hahn began the Sunday service welcome by saying, "it's my privilege to serve on the board of trustees here at First Unitarian." The way he phrased it really caught my attention--I don't remember anyone putting it that way before. It is a privilege to serve as a trustee of this church, our beloved community. I've learned more about this community and myself by being on the board these past two years than I did in the previous ten.

What a great Ingathering service last Sunday! It was so good to see everyone again, to welcome each other home. And have you looked around the congregation lately? There are new faces. Young people, families with children, older couples. I think word is getting out that First Unitarian is a good place to be on a Sunday morning. Great music, thoughtful sermons, meaningful ritual. Who wouldn’t want to be there?!

Last weekend the Board held its annual retreat. Furman Brown and Matt Disbrow graciously hosted us at their home, and we enjoyed four hours of beautiful weather, good conversation, laughter and learning. Yes, I mean enjoyed! We got to know everyone on the church leadership team of board and staff better, and we had meaningful and heartfelt discussions about where we’re headed this year. We were ably led by Rev. Kelly Dignan, who currently serves the Greeley UU church.

At the board meeting in August we did something a little different. In fact, we did something we haven’t done for twelve years—we welcomed a new minister to the church (yes, it’s been 12 years since Mike joined us!). Beth Chronister started her new position as our part-time “ministerial resident” (I’ll get to why we’re calling her that in a minute) on August 12 . The board hosted a start-up event for her at our meeting on the 14th. Rev.
